Introduction The Tufts-in-Madrid program, which includes options in Madrid and in Alcalá, is designed as a one-year program of academic study. Students are strongly urged to stay for the full academic year, but students who are unable to go for the full academic year may apply to attend the fall (in Alcalá only) or spring semester (in either location). Preference is given to students who apply for the full year. The program is run jointly with Skidmore-in-Madrid. Since the restoration of democracy in Spain in 1977, Madrid, the country’s capital, has become an exciting cultural, political, and commercial center in Western Europe. It harbors a wealth of historical, architectural, and artistic treasures to be discovered and enjoyed. Situated in the center of the Iberian peninsula, the city offers easy access to all of the country’s regions and provides the opportunity to become acquainted with a cross section of Spain’s diverse cultural heritage. Tufts University has enjoyed an exchange relationship with the Autonomous University of Madrid since 1985 and with the University of Alcalá since the fall of 2000.

Amazing. I learned so much and more Spanish than I ever thought I would. It helped me forge my identity, and creating lasting memories and connections.

Great experience. I was able to integrate into the culture but because my program was all Tufts students so I tended to stay with them. I had a great host family who helped me improve my Spanish. But I wish more effort was made to introduce us to more native people. Classes were easy but very differently organized.

I loved my experience, the program really took care of us and helped us out with anything we needed. I much preferred being in the smaller city of Alcala de Henares rather than Madrid because it allowed me to really become part of the town rather than just visiting.

Most incredible program -- the staff is absolutely delightful and a reason to go without all the other wonderful aspects. This is a great location since you have a more "home" feeling in Alcala, but it is still a city and a short ride to Madrid. People were so friendly and always willing to speak Spanish with you and not switch into English. Don't go anywhere else -- this is the best!!!
